Its flowers are renowned for its sweet scented property, and the circular fruit is rougher and darker in comparison to other varieties of citrus. Similar to a popular variety of sweet orange known as blood orange, whose pulp is not a bright orange colour, but rather a beautiful red. 2
Sweet orange has been used throughout history as a natural remedy for many ailments. It is said to be first obtained from a native tree in China but has also been cultivated widely in the Mediterranean region, France, North and South America and Portugal. Folk remedies in the Mediterranean, Middle East, China, and India used orange to relieve fatigue, cold, cough, low libido, indigestion, poor circulation, spasms, and skin infections.
1. Effective in Fighting Cancer
There are compounds found in orange that have been acknowledged to be cancer-fighting. One of the main phytochemicals present in orange is d-limonene and this is what holds the anti-cancer characteristics. There have been several tests performed which proved that d-limonene can reduce tumors and breast cancer cells. It has also been proven that the phytochemicals found in the peel of an orange can constrain the reproduction of human lung cancer cells.
2. It Helps to Boosts your Immune System
Because orange contains such high limonene content it is a powerful antioxidant with continually assists the bodies immune system. The essential oil holds great diuretic properties which assist in the detoxification process of the body, it also helps fight free radicals in the body, it increases the absorption of vitamin C to the body and it also reduces the risk of developing ageing symptoms to the body. All these factors combined mean a healthier immune system.

- A drop of the essential oil can also be put in a glass of water to take internally.
3. It Helps to Cleanse the Skin
With the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory factors, the essential oil contains it can be used to clear skin or maintain healthy skin. It can help with teenagers who suffer with acne by eliminating bacteria. People who suffer from dry, damaged and aging skin can use sweet orange essential oil to boost collegen and decrease wrinkles to the skin. The oil can also protect you from UV damage.
- Forming a mix of orange essential oil and organic aloe vera gel can be applied to the face with cotton wool, to reduce spots, blemishes and wrinkles.
4. Great as a Relaxing Agent
Sweet orange essential oil contains properties that help to keep the human body and nervous system relaxed. It acts as a sedative by removing mental and physical fatigue and pain, however the effect it has is different to narcotic drugs as the natural oil doesn’t have a risk of addition and side effects. This is because the essential oil keeps your senses alert whilst keeping your body relaxed.
- By adding a few drops of the essential oil into a home diffuser or your bath, you can benefit from its relaxing nature.
5. It is used as an Antispasmodic
When muscles in your body have involuntary contractions, it can cause painful spasms/ muscle cramps. It can directly cause muscle tears and sprains.
Due to the anti-inflammatory and relaxing benefits of sweet orange essential oil can cause immediate relief. The oil can also help when spasms occur in the abdominal preventing severe pain and diarrhea.
