History

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) essential oil is extracted from the leaves and buds of a flowering herb that’s native to the Mediterranean Basin. It has a clean, refreshing scent that you can use as a skin balm or gently inhale as part of an aromatherapy treatment.

Medieval herbalists included sage in a mixture called Four Thieves vinegar. This concoction, which along with sage contained strong white vinegar, wormwood, cloves and other herbs, was thought to prevent the spread of the plague. Sage also appears in written texts as far back as the Roman naturalist and historian, Pliny the Elder. Pliny describes how sage was used as a local anaesthetic, a diuretic and a styptic. In 800 A.D., the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne decreed that every farm in his empire must grow sage for the benefit of the nation.

Clary sage is easy to grow in high-temperature areas. It’s usually cultivated for its use as a flavouring in tea. It’s also known by the names “clear eye” and “eye bright” because of its traditional use as a treatment for eye health. But it’s now being studied for a variety of other health benefits. Today researchers suspect that the aromatics contained in the sage and other herbs actually worked as a flea repellant. Unbeknownst to the medieval herbalist, it was actually the fleas that carried and transmitted the plague.

7 Benefits of Clary Sage Essential Oil

1. Boost your Memory and Improves Cognition

Sage is the herb you should reach for if you want to give yourself a memory boost. In 1597, well-known herbalists detailed how sage is good for the brain and “quickens the nerves and memory.” Over the years, people have added it to teas for that same reason, to improve memory. Recently, researchers say there’s proof that this wise tale of medicine may actually work. In one particular clinical trial, it was found that sage had the ability to improve memory. Healthy, young adults who had taken sage oil capsules performed significantly better in a word recall test.

Also, numerous studies have focused on the benefits of aromatherapy, showcasing positive effects on both mood and cognition. While focusing on sage, researchers have not only found this herb to improve memory. It may even improve specific symptoms of dementia. Sage has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant property, which may protect against the development of dementia. It may offer mood-enhancing effects among those who suffer from the advanced stages of this degenerative condition. More importantly, a component in sage offers neuroprotective properties. This reduces the toxic effects of amyloid beta plaques, protein deposits that are a hallmark sign of Alzheimer’s disease.

2. Used as a Natural Painkiller

Whether you suffer from chronic back pain or muscle ache, it’s important to address your symptoms as naturally as possible. Both over-the-counter and prescription painkillers may cause negative side effects. These include nausea, vomiting, confusion and far too many unfortunate cases of addiction and even death.

For those who suffer from severe menstrual pain, researchers have found that blended essential oils relieve pain, targeting cramps and aches. Within one study, researchers recruited participants with dysmenorrhea or painful periods. Researchers either randomly assigned these individuals to an essential oil group or a synthetic fragrance group.

3. Reduces Stress

If you want to feel calmer in your mind and reduce feelings of anxiety, aromatherapy is great as it uses the power of scent to achieve its fantastic results. Your olfactory system directly affects the part of your brain that regulates emotion. That is why what you smell can trigger memories and elicit feelings, both negative and positive.

When used in aromatherapy, clary sage oil can help alleviate stress by inducing a sense of well-being. One small study done on women undergoing a stressful medical test indicated that when inhaled, clary sage essential oil elicited feelings of relaxation and helped to reduce blood pressure.

4. Reduces Menstrual cramps

Ovulation and menstruation are a regular part of any woman’s life, and a healthy menstrual cycle is essential to the well-being of a woman. However, menstruation can also be quite daunting, and many women can encounter a range of problems such as dysmenorrhea, cramps, and other symptoms. Sage essential oil has emmenagogue properties which allow it to release hormones such as estrogen, which can, in turn, allow problem-free menstruation.

Along with healthy menstrual cycles, sage oil can also relieve other problems typically associated with menstruation. These problems include nausea, weakness, fatigue, headaches, mood swings, or depression. Unfortunately for a lot of women, periods are not really a good experience, however, it has to come every month. Fortunately, sage oil can make this experience a lot easier.

A study was carried out which examined 48 women who were experiencing painful menstruation and cramps. Some of the women were given a cream containing clary sage oil and other essential oils to apply onto their lower abdomens daily, between menstrual cycles. The women who used the cream had a significant reduction in menstrual cramps than the control group. This is due to the fact that Sage has emmenagogue properties. “Emmenagogue” may be a strange word, but it basically just refers to anything that has the ability to induce or improve menstrual flow. Sage oil has emmenagogue properties, which means that the use of sage oil can lead to a better menstrual cycle.

5. Controls Inflammation

More recent studies have supported the use of sage in dentistry for its anti-inflammatory properties. One study investigated the effects of a range of these compounds on the inflammatory response in gingival fibroblasts. These are a common type of cell found in the connective tissue of the gums. Some of the compounds in sage helped to reduce this type of inflammation.

Sage along with many other herbs and spices appear to have anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antimicrobial effects. If you’re dealing with inflammation, just a couple of drops of sage oil might be a good remedy. Sage oil possesses anti-inflammatory properties that allow it to reduce inflammations caused by fever, toxic material in the bloodstream, the consumption of spicy food, or even intoxicants like alcohol or narcotics. Sage oil can also deal with various types of inflammations that may occur on the skin as well as in the digestive system.

Although more evidence is needed to confirm this benefit, it is certain that sage contains compounds which appear to have an anti-inflammatory action.

6. Treats Symptoms of Diabetes

Diabetes is a complex disease that has many contributing factors and can create different symptoms in different people. Sage’s ability to lower glucose levels has been proven in animal studies. For instance, researchers gave mice and rats common sage tea to test its antidiabetic effects. They concluded that ” its effects on fasting glucose levels in normal animals and its Metformin-like effects on rat hepatocytes suggest that sage may be useful as a food supplement in the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus by lowering the plasma glucose of individuals at risk.” (3)

The risk factors, such as poor diet, high blood pressure, obesity, and physical inactivity can all play a role in type 2 diabetes. Stress may make symptoms worse for some, and rapid changes to the diet and physical activity levels may affect others more. People who are in these situations may find essential oils very beneficial. Adding a few drops of this essential oil to an aromatherapy diffuser and taking long, deep breaths of the vapour produced is an easy way to get any beneficial compounds into the body.

7. Used to Maintain Healthy Skin

This is one of the most valuable aspects of this essential oil and is the reason behind its extensive use in anti-ageing and skin treatment products. It is also added to skin care products like anti-mark and anti-spot creams, which help prevent cracks, scars and other unwanted marks on the skin.

This essential oil contains an ester called linalyl acetate that helps to heal rashes and reduce skin inflammation. In skin care, the addition of clary sage essential oil helps to regulate sebum production, tones the skin as mild astringent. Clary sage essential oil also reduces inflammation associated with acne. and makes the skin look beautiful and young.
